The Edit Button Q&A – The Fashion Bug Blog

Fashion | Q&A

I liked Laura, The Fashion Bug Blog, the minute I met her. She was fun, chatty and we instantly hit it off. We were both getting married abroad that year, her in Ibiza and myself in South Africa, and we chatted about all things weddings and everything that goes along with planning one. This was pre-babies and just after Laura had started her hugely successful and popular blog. I started reading the blog after we met and admired her writing, her personal style and her much lusted after wardrobe.

Now, 3 years on, her blog is even more celebrated and her following is ever growing. Her daily outfit posts act as chronicles of style inspiration and her stories highlight a range of her favourite shopping must-haves ranging from designer pieces to more affordable alternatives. As a new mother myself, I was intrigued to know how she juggles being a mother of 2, as well as maintaining and keeping her blog updated and current. I barely get myself dressed some days and so admire anyone who can look as chic and polished as her. Below is a Q&A with Laura to get a little insight in to her world

How did the Fashion Bug Blog start and what inspired you to do it?

I was in a place in my life where I needed a creative outlet and it really started as a sort of diary for myself. I have always loved putting together outfits and it was really just a bit of fun at first. My husband calls me bug and thats where the name comes from.

When did you realise how popular your blog was becoming?

For me reaching 1000 followers was always a MASSIVE milestone. I will always remember that and its so lovely that some of the very early followers are still following along.

What advice would you give to readers who’d like to start their own blog?

If its something you really love then keep at it! Its very rewarding. It is also a lot of hard work – I think its important people know that before starting. Writing blog posts, creating content, replying to followers – all things that I LOVE but you have to be really dedicated.

How do you juggle being a mother as well as being a such a successful blogger and fashion influencer?

I am still learning! Not sure anyone ever learns how to. Some days I think I have it all together and some days I am a frazzled mess. The mum guilt is also really bad – I do sometimes think perhaps I should put the blog on hold and focus on being a mother but ultimately it makes me really happy and I love having something for myself.

Do you think motherhood changes the way women feel about themselves/their style?

To a certain extent yes. I wear flats way more than I used to and have been more restricted in terms of what I wear due to breastfeeding but I think you can work around most things. For example if I really feel like wearing a dress I will express and I often wear heels but take flats with me so I can run around with the girls. It also depends on what I am doing that day – if I have meetings I always wear heels but of course if I am in the park with the girls I am in comfy clothes.

What is your favourite part about being a mother of 2 daughters?

Seeing the bond they share. Seeing how much love I have for both. They are both so incredible but in different ways. I honestly worried about loving Anoushka as much but the moment she was born all the worries went away – my heart is more full than I could ever have imagined and I have given them such an amazing gift by having each other.

Describe a typical day in your life?

There is no typical day haha. But i get up around 6:30 as both my girls are early risers. Usually spend some time at home with them and then always get my coffee and head to the park. I then often go to Wholefoods and pick up some food and flowers. And sometimes I do this with just Mila – it was always important for me that I spend a bit of quality alone time with each of my daughters. If I have any meetings I organise them for the morning and then any work things I do whilst the girls have their long lunchtime nap. Some afternoons are spent doing nursery runs as Mila goes to nursery a few times a week and when she is there I like to spend time with Anoushka really playing and bonding with her as its often hectic when its the two of them. From 6 onwards its all about dinner and bathtime and then the girls are usually in bed by 7pm. The evenings I spend either chilling out with my husband having dinner or watching movies, going out on a date night or occasionally catching up with friends.

Who are your favourite designers?

Zimmermann, Gul Hurgle, Ganni, Gucci. Also love finding new brands such as La Double J I recently stumbled across and small independent brands such as Kaimima a bag brand I found via Instagram.

Describe your style in 3 words?

Playful, feminine, bold.

What would be your perfect outfit for an evening out?

An amazing dress such as the Ulla Johnson one I recently wore, high heels and a big pair of statement earrings.

Where and from whom do you get styling and outfit ideas from?

All over really. Instagram. Online sites – I love how some of the big retailers style their looks. Magazines – I will always love magazines.

What advice would you give yourself if you could start all over again?

To be brave. Make mistakes – thats how you learn.
